sugar mill

Sugarmill

Yesterday during lunch we visited the ruins of this old sugar mill.  According to the camden county website the mill is "made of lime, water, powered oyster shells, and crushed oyster shells."

Frog

Yesterday after the rain let up we saw a bunch of toads. In addition to the toads we also are over-run with sand flies.

Georgia

We're at another beautiful state park.  This morning it is 68 degrees with 98% humidity, which makes us think it must be unbearable here in the summer.

cat boxes

Gramps

Yesterday when we left Grandpa's we left him in the art room - where he had a sign out front inviting all to join him in making boxes.  I'm not sure if he was aware that the sign implied that they might be making litter boxes, but I guess it doesn't matter because G-pa is really into boxes.  He'll even give you one if you make a donation to hospice.

your mother dresses you funny

Through the years, my mom has enjoyed making me look silly by adorning me with tiaras, eyeglasses and jewelry made out of pipe cleaners.  Yesterday she introduced the tradition to Curtis.

Brian actually got pretty into it, however, this was the most flattering picture that came from the festivities.

Mollie

Even though Mollie here looks a little disgruntled, she seems to not mind having Curtis around this week.

Happy Thanksgiving!

golf cart

Golf_curtis

We've been motoring around Sun City in Grandpa's golf cart.

We tried having Curtis on the leash trailing along the side, but that didn't work because he kept trying to run in front of the cart.

Turns out he prefers the lazy route.

another text post

When things aren't as easy as they usually are then we aren't able to post as often as we'd like and get pictures up to share.  We've stayed IN my grandfather's house the last two nights and don't have all of our things nearby to make posting easy.  I do have a picture to put up, but the card reader is in the trailer....

The first night here we couldn't check in to the campground because they don't do weekend check-in.  Last night we didn't sleep in the trailer because for some reason we had a terrible leak and our bedding got drenched.

A good side story:  Sunday Curtis was running full speed toward us and didn't notice the swimming pool in front of him.  He plunged in, went totally under water for the first time in his life and instinctively figured out the doggy paddle and swam to safety.  It was really funny.

PS: Thanks for the birthday wishes!!!!

good night & good luck

For our last night in the Columbia, SC area we went out with Anthony and Brande to see "Good Night and Good Luck."  The guys liked it, and Brande and I thought it was a little slow going.

We then went to a great dinner which ended with the restaurant manager insisting on a group hug. Now that's Southern hospitality or maybe he was drunk.

united airlines

Last night my United flight back to South Carolina was canceled - of course. I had to stay the night and finally made it back today.

It's not just my miles that keep me loyal to American Airlines now...

travel

I haven't posted in the last 2 days because I went to Chicago.  Brian was going to, but didn't.

Thursday I flew United out of Columbia, SC.

The plane was delayed first for a tired change, then we sat on the runway waiting for the go-ahead to take off.  Meanwhile this random guy gets up and goes to the bathroom.  The pilot gets the green light to take off  while this guy is in the bathroom.  The flight attendant bangs on the bathroom door to get him to come out.  The guy comes out yelling at her "I've waited for this plane to take off for 2 hours and I can't go to the bathroom?"

We take off.

The girl in front of me is BLASTING her CD player the entire time, except for when the flight attendant was within earshot.

She came back to yell at the man for breaking FAA regulation and asked would he like to be met by security when we land.  The man yells back at her and she keeps repeating "do you want to be met by security?"

For some reason the plane isn't ascending very high.

The flight attendant goes away, and the girl in front of me turns her CD player back on.  Which blows my mind considering that the guy next to her is getting an earful for breaking FAA regulation.

The captain comes on and says his control panel tells him that the door isn't shut completely - though our cabin pressure is fine and because of this we have to return to the airport.

We land safely, deplane and are greeted by a bunch of cops.  They fix the door, and let us all back on so we can sit on the runway some more.

My 2 hour flight was 4 hours late, and I went from beautiful South Carolina weather to 20 degree weather in Chicago.

I fly back tonight.  Hopefully it won't take as long.

love it here

Sc3

Yet another shot of where we're parked because we love it here so much.

what book are you?

We haven't taken any new photos - so we're going to promote our friend Ron's Blog where he featured the book quiz to assess your personality.

Brian is The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, and I am Siddhartha

internet woes

Sc

We've moved twice this weekend trying to get a spot with a clear shot for internet.  We upgraded our location to a more beautiful spot but our cables were a bit short for getting connected.  Brian's friend Anthony hooked us up this morning with a TON of co-ax cable and a wireless connection while we visited.

The view of the sunset from our trailer last night.

tic

CurtiesticWe found this tic on Curtis yesterday, and of course had to take a picture of it.

Good thing he has his lyme disease shots.

duke forest

Raiseroof

Yesterday, toward the end of the day, we went on a hike in Duke Forest, property of Duke University.

We were on a geocache and it was our first without a trail.  We followed the GPS directions for awhile and realized we were losing sunlight and decided to turn back before we got totally lost and became a news story.  'Twas beautiful though.

Happy Birthday Mom!

Birchwood
The mobile homes and the permanent residents aren't as bad as the sewer smell here at the birchwood rv park.  The upside to our stay here is the whole foods market.

bread

This week we're enjoying delicious fresh baked bread from Great Harvest Bread Company.

Hosting

Yesterday we went to see where the website for my job is hosted.

Above is the front door to where that computer lives.  Inside there is a  mission control room that had many large screens monitoring the weather.

We then had to get past multiple layers of security with fingerprint door locks reminicent of the CIA when I made like Sydney Bristow and snuck a shot of the PS servers with my little camera.

trashy trailer park

Blocks

We're in a pretty trashy park in Durham, NC. We were going to stay for 2 weeks, to rest and take in some of the civilized world, but upon check-in we decided we'd be here just a week.

The parking spots aren't very level - see the cinder blocks (provided by campground).

abe & melissa

Lincolnhouse

We caught up with Abe and Melissa at their house in Richmond today, they were kind enough to offer us laundry, showers and 30 amp service!

This is the basic scenery around here - not too shabby.

Caterpillar

In AUGUST my friend Mike suggested a few times that I really should check out google earth - 3 months later I finally did, and it is soooo cool, I feel kind of dumb for waiting so long!  Sorry mac friends, it's pc only for now.

Side note:  poor Brian got sewage in his face while un-clogging the toilet. Ah trailer life.

Now that all of the other campers have cleared out, there are deer everywhere.

Last night Curtis was sprayed by a skunk and today we launched the new Paper Source website.
