my darling clementine

new spot

Austin2

This coming weekend is an Airstream rally with about 45 Airstreams expected.  I've been emailing with the organizer and learned where the vintage trailers will be parking, so today we moved.

cacti

Cactus

With so many cactuses here, we feel we've definitely made some progress in our trek back west.

birthday buddy & blog

birthday_buddy.jpg

Six years and six weeks ago I found Curtis at the Glendale Humane Society.   I was there helping a friend find a dog, but Curtie gave me the big sad eyes and I was suckered into taking him home and letting him have diarrhea all over my Hollywood apartment.

Today also marks the 1 year anniversary of this blog.  I don't think we really had any idea what we were starting.

armadillo

Dillo

This cutie lives in a hole near our trailer (possibly a leper).

mckinney falls state park

Austin

This is our establishing shot for the next 2 weeks.

drive thru south

South

This weekend we drove 730 miles through Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana to get to Austin, Texas.  There was quite a bit of hurricane damage along the drive, including a LOT of abandoned cars on the highway and smashed up boats on the river banks.

sunset

Boardwalk

The beach and the sunset here are obviously gorgeous.  Right outside of the park is suburban sprawl, hence, more beach pix.

curtie love

Jen_curtis

Our friend Aaron's mom was corresponding with travel and poker writer Jen Leo and sent her a link to our blog.  Jen (clearly, a very smart woman) was immediately smitten with our Curtis Elian and repeatedly proclaimed him the "best dog ever" on her written road blog

Jen has another blog on a favorite subject of ours:  Las Vegas.

oil change

Oilchange

Not much happening besides the oil change we got this morning...

CST

Henderson

This past weekend we drove on the 10 West (transcontinental - how cool is that) and it apparently took us far enough that we moved into Central Time and we're still in Florida.

henderson beach

Beach

suwannee river

Sriver

Last night we spent the night at the Suwannee River State Park. It's a beautiful park, though we'd never be able to stay for a week - the tall trees block satellite access.

River

This is the Suwannee River, which was made famous by the Stephen Foster song Old Folks Home.

last night

Bradenton1

For our last night in the Tampa area, we went back to Ray and Terrie's.  After dinner, we took the dogs for a walk and a stranger was kind enough to take this picture.

Bradenton2

That stranger turned out to be neighbors with R&T.  Above is Suzanne, Dan and their friend Scott.  Suzanne is a museum curator, Dan a Toyota dealer, and Scott an anatomy and physiology professor.

bird

Bird

This guy was sitting in a tree right next to our trailer.  In the second shot he's looking down at Curtis.  I guess it's some kind of hawk...please help us identify!

flower vase

Vase2My parents bought me this vase for my birthday in November. It's an antique car vase that they found on ebay. Brian and my Dad used the pop rivet gun to mount it by the door. Today it features a hibiscus that we found growing wild.

dog beach

Beachbuddy

There is an off-leash dog beach here, and Curtis thinks it's grrreat!

battery laidley

Ftdesoto

Up the road from where we are staying is the fortification known as Battery Laidly. In August 1902, 8 mortars were mounted, and a year later, test fired. Intended to defend Tampa Bay, they were never used against an enemy. In 1917 four of the mortars were moved to San Diego for WWI. Today Fort De Soto has the only 12-inch seacoast mortars in the US, the only others are on an island in the Philippines.

the don

Hotel

We didn't do much yesterday, just relaxed, bought groceries, drove by this place (locals call it "The Don"). The Don CeSar Beach Resort Spa is on the national register of historical places so we thought we should take a picture.

local hospitality

Jay_ray2

Last night we went to the home of fellow airstreamers Ray and Terrie.  We met R&T  last weekend while they were camping here in their 1965 Airstream Safari (link goes to same year and model, not their actual trailer).

Pictured above is Ray in the foreground and their neighbor Jay.  I kind of outlined their airstream in the background.

ladies tournament

Poker Brian isn't the only one who knows how to play poker in this trailer.

Today I played the 2006 Hard Rock Tampa Ladies NL Hold'em Tournament and won 1st place.  I don't really think I'm that fabulous, because these were the WORST players I've ever encountered.

racoon

Racoon

Forgive the blurry photo, but I didn't have much time with the camera when we discovered that Curtis chased a racoon up a tree. Later some people were walking by and one guy pointed to Curtis and said "that's him, that's the dog that treed the coon!" Curtie's famous!

window

View

This is the view out the back window of the trailer.

hard rock casino

Hardrock

Last night we went to the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino and played a $100 buy-in NL Hold 'Em single table tournament. My hero Brian won first place.

The poker room has about 50 tables, the casino is beautiful though it allows smoking everywhere and EVERYONE but us was smoking.

fort de soto park

Desoto

It is beautiful here.

a fresh start

C_teeth

C-dog is starting 2006 right, having just visited Kindred Spirits Animal Clinic.  He got his teeth cleaned, a bath, his nails done, and a 3 month supply of flea and tic meds.

We, on the other hand, stayed out late last night, had a GREAT time until we hit the 2 hour parking lot traffic jam and when we finally got home at 3am, we didn't even consider flossing.
